The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter (1940) is a novel by Carson McCullers. It is centered on a deaf-mute named John Singer and the people he encounters in a 1930s Georgia mill town.
Singer encounters many different people in the story, but most notably the other four main ones: Mick Kelly, Jake Blount, Biff Brannon, and Doctor Copeland. The deaf-mute is a sad, depressed man who reluctantly solves problems for everyone else.
